ViewNaija is a curated virtual archive of the Nigerian culture. The application enables users to time travel through Nigerian history beginning with the Benin Exhibition. The Benin Exhibition chronicles the history of the Edo people’s alliance with the Portuguese and the British invasion of the Benin Kingdom. It features 3D recreations of famous Benin artifacts currently seen in major museums around the globe. Modern day Edo culture is also showcased and visitors can see famous paintings from present day Nigerian artists, including the Presidential portrait of Barack Obama by Kehinde Wiley - a Nigerian born artist. The application mixes up education with entertainment as visitors can explore a virtual nightclub featuring Afrobeat music videos. Nigerian history is a major part of world history and understanding it allows us to learn from the past in order to better direct our future. The culture has always been preserved by the artists of the time with the best medium they had available, virtual reality technology allows us to take this one step further.
Includes videos and art work from Kehinde Wiley, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Ben Enwonwu, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Ayo Binitie, Fireboy DML and the human codeable framework. All copyrights reserved by the artists.
