Queen Idia was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. She played a very significant role in the rise and reign of her son. She has been described as a great warrior. The Benin ivory masks representing Queen Idia, court of Benin, 16th century were stolen by the British and today reside in museums in London, New York and Germany. The art of creating these masks however has been passed down from generation to generation. ViewNaija tracked down one of these artisans to create an original silver Queen Idia mask. Hopefully no one steals this one.
